Farms

Hamstead and Great Barr has been for most of its time a rural community and even today has significant reminders of its rural past. Only one farmhouse exists at Peak House - this was considered for listing but as it is a 'standard' sort of farmhouse it was not considered and being rare enough, although it is uncommon in this area.

There are several areas which are used for grazing but no real farming.

Situated between the canal and Scott Arms the farmhouse was situated around where the shops are now in Gorse Farm Road.
Part of the Great Barr estate owned by the Scott family it was sold in 1920.

It consisted of 37 acres 2 rood 27 perches divided into ten enclosures.

There was a cottage with living room, scullery, pantry and two bedrooms

The farm buildings consisted of three-stall stable, chaff-house, mixing house with loft over, six-tie cowshed, loose box, open cart shed, foldyard with brick cattle shed.

In 1920 it was being let to Mr. Richard Smith.
Hall Farm was described as "an ancient dwelling , a product of the peace which succeeded the Napoleonic Wars situated near Hamstead House. At the black and white farm lived John Hotchkiss and his family .

[Meacham 1988]
The area bounded by Bowstoke Road and Tanhouse Avenue was originally part of Hems Farm. Hems Farmhouse was near the end of Hamstead road on the corner where it turns before joining the Newton Road.
